Today, if George Sand climbed the slopes of Malgré-tout, which she immortalised in her noval of the sam name, it would no longer be “a village of locksmiths” which she contemplated but rather a town which during the last 150 years hqs developed along the meanders of the meuse, encroaching onto the surrounding forest and along the flanks of the valley becoming today, with 8089 inhabitants, the third most important town in the Departement of the Ardennes.

It is also the leading industrial town in the lower valley of the meuse in France in spite of the destruction caused by the wars, the hazards of the economic climate and technical evolution. It is also a cultural centre with an art gallery and the cultural centre Jean Vilar.
